Knowledge and Semantic Interoperability

In the current global and knowledge-based business context, enterprise’s competitiveness is to a large extent determined by its ability to seamlessly interoperate in a collaborative business way. Consequently, to meet such business objective, it is essential that enterprises adapt their knowledge resources to smoothly interact with others. Then, the way knowledge is handled, is critical to organize such collaborative ways of working, which requires intellectual achievements sharing to facilitate continuous knowledge advancement among their members.

However, due to the existent multiculturalism of people and enterprises, there are different representation views of business processes or products, even inside the same domain. Consequently, one of the main problems found in the interoperability between enterprise systems and applications is related to semantics. Semantic interoperability concerns to the ability of two systems to present and process, user information tasks in a way that meanings of those tasks are retained. It relates to the capability of managing concepts’ meanings and consequently its knowledge. A smooth semantic interoperability resolution of enterprises knowledge resources and systems requests an advanced characteristic of interoperation that is dynamicity. On the other hand, such dynamic competence demands a high level of semantic adaptability, which represents the capacity level of adapting the system existent semantics or lexicon to new acquired knowledge.

 

 

The sharing and integration of enterprises’ knowledge to build a common lexicon supported by artificial intelligence as learning proficiency capacitates an autonomously and dynamically knowledge acquisition able to establish and preserve interoperable communications with others. Thus, the research of knowledge creation theories and approaches for the improvement of sharing, transferring, and creation of knowledge solutions is crucial. This also conducts to the necessity of having effective knowledge transfer from research to the industry or academia, which aggregates concepts as technology enhanced learning or technological and business evaluation methods that would potentiate new technological innovations generation. Additionally, this research area endorses the vision that in the near future knowledge creation solutions would potentiate both people and systems in joint effective self-transcending knowledge creation approaches.
